(Nov. 18, 2011)

In December 2007, I wrote about Shadows on the Hudson for my first NightSpots column. Four years later, my beloved kick-off hangout has changed a bit, but only for the better. On any day of the week, or time of day, Shadows seems to be busy, albeit with one of many different crowds. Credit the flawlessly professional and bright Bonura family; hard-working, energized, charming manager Milti Kastanis; and the dedicated bartenders who know how to mix one heck of a cocktail — this restaurant/lounge/bar/nightclub has unearthed the secret to appealing to every type of customer possible.

Backdrop

Shadows’ makeover was more a make-under, trading in its earthy look for a more sophisticated one. My favorite nest-like light fixtures still hang from above, but the tree motif is gone and sheer curtains now drape over the floor-to-ceiling windows. Oversized, drum-shaped chandeliers float over the brand new tile dance floor. The true-to-its-name Sunset Room is, thankfully, the same, and the frosted White Room is still radiant and immaculate.

Mixology

Try the lemon drop Hemingway Sidecar, made with Hennessy VS Cognac and Cointreau, or the white grape-flavored Jimi Hendrick’s. Seasonal beer on tap includes a variety of pumpkin ales and Shock Top Raspberry Wheat. Half-priced appetizers and drinks are available during Happy Hour, Monday-Friday, 4-6 p.m. Buy-one, get-one vodka drinks offered on Saturdays from 9-10 p.m.

What’s cookin’?

Start off your meal with the gorgonzola fondue, served with sauteed shrimp and garlic bread. Notable entrees include the truffle lobster mac and cheese, and the rack of lamb served with a rosemary port demi-glace. Daily menu specials are offered Monday-Saturday.

Highlights

Live bands every Friday night, starting with Nuts in a Blender on Black Friday.

STEREO Saturdays is what’s got everyone talking: Rotational DJs play the first set, followed by house music by DJ Joey Bumps. Go-go dancers strut and sway on platforms. VIP areas are sprinkled around the dance floor.

Upcoming events include “A Night in Morocco” Saturday at 10:30 p.m. and a bash to reunite with old friends on Thanksgiving Eve.
